If its a knocking sound then its probably the 1st motion bearing on the gearbox....

knocking? more like a loose metalic rattle.

If it is what you said, is it something to lose any sleep over? & should i be worried? and is it an engine out job?

It will sound like a metallic rattle (knocking was the wrong word to use) Not a lot you do without a gearbox rebuild, it will probably go on for a long time with that rattle, is very common on Vauxhaull's had several from new that have done that for thousands of miles and kept going strong, although I am sure someone on here will know one way or another.

dare i ask, what would have caused it?

is it an age of the car/gearbox kind of thing?

There is only two things that can make this - clutch release bearing and bearings in gearbox. Clutch release bearing makes nice rattle when clutch is disengaged, but I have heared that it may be like in your case. Gearbox main bearings would "sing" depending on engine speed
In your case I will remove gearbox [because it will be necessary anyway], then u will see how easy turns primary shaft of gearbox and u can only wish that it's release bearing and not main bearings of gearbox

humm... something i'd like to add, don't know if its relevant, but might be helpful, Often when i get home from work and out of the car i can smell a burning smell. And some people have also commented on it when they've been in the car while I've been just moving off from standstill with the windows open.

I wondered if it was the clutch, but it's quite a new clutch, and it don't slip or anything.
