Hi, ive got a noise which has developed from inside the rocker cover, and was wondering if anyone can help?
Basically the rotor arm metal contact broke when the engiene was running...i got a new rotor arm and when i started the engiene there was a noticable rattle inside the rocker cover towards the back. The noise only occurs when it gets to about 3000rpm, and then fades out back to idle...it never did it before the rotor arm broke so im assuming it has to be something to do with the distributor? Any help id appreciate, thanks ![]() |

Not part of the broken rotor arm still inside the distributor?

Is it a 20v? Only the Distributor Drive Gear and Camshaft Drive Chain are both infamous for rattling.

Probably the fith cylinder lifter. Iv'e had 86 000 mile cars do it and 210 000 mile cars that didn't, but the ones that did the noise would come and go, and some sounded like the engine was ready to give in but never had a problem. I was told by a mate who has been buying, selling and running audi's for over 20 years that the fith cylinder lifter doesn't get enough oil, and he also told me audi stripped a high milage engine with this fault to find no damage at all, which in my experiance is probably right as i have "driven em like i stole em" and never had any mechanical faliures at all.

Did you know......that you can actually partially strip hydraulic lifters and clean them? At least on 10 valvers anyway.
If you turn them upside down theres a protruding valve that contacts the valve stem. If you carefully grip this with pliers and lightly twist it as you pull, that valve will come out so you can soak it in paraffin overnight to remove the deposits. This has been a public service announcement on behalf of the Audi Party. ![]() |

& I'd replace the dizzy cap too, whilst you're at it; if you've had a running rotor failure, could have made all sorts of cracks/shorts etc in the existing cap - I wouldn't trust it

Exhaust manifold leak? My leak sounded like lifters, but is much louder under acceleration.
