Dare i say a 306 td or hdi? you can get plenty of cheap 5 door models, that havent been messed with for a £1000, also dirt cheap insurance if thats an issue, i had one for 4 years, standard, no boost or fuel pressure turned up, all it cost me was servicing in that time, my mother has the car now, while i am not a fan of french cars, i have to admit i was impressed with that one! Very comfortable if you have to do long journeys too.
I drove it like i stole it, the whole time i had it, and still got mid 50-55 mpg depending on the length of journeys i was doing.

BTW that car now has 180,000 miles on the clock and still going strong, so they do last the test of time!

can second that, not through experience, but a lad I work with had one for 3 years.
Did about 30k in that time, got 55+ out of it, overall spend in 3 years was less than £200 and sold it for about £400 less than when he bought it.

more choises! oh christ..

@ steve-driver-pimp. yes. there is now a flaw in my plan....

i thought i might have six months to sort one of the 100s out.. no. went for an ultrasound yesterday expecting them to say ten weeks gone, maybe?.. no... sixteen weeks gone..! AHAHgHgHg! help! lol! on the way home from the hospital witnessed a 'mum' and a single baby tyring to get into the back of a two door toyota IQ... i could describe her big hairy bum crack for you quite well if you'd like! then watched her trying to cram the pushchair into the front seat..

phook.. think i might just buy an avensis estate and keep the turbo bus as a 'hobby'.. i can't be arsed fixing cars that you need to use every day, and i can't find the time either. i might just have to go all bland and middle aged before my time.

If you want bland and middle aged and practical and boring, then get an A6 avant.
Rapid is selling his 2.5TDi A6 avant on an O2 plate for £2995.
Cheap to run, push chair space (congrats by the way!!), and it will comfortably take you anywhere. Boring - hell yeah!
