Us Brits drive round on summer tyres all year round, and they are less than optimal for grip below about 9 deg C or so............
hummm.. I was thinking of something a little more along the lines of an off road tire? or perhaps semi off road.

Because of where i live I have to travel up and down hills on country lanes that in all likely hood , if it were to snow, no one else will have been before me (or at least partially) .

No gritters or snow plows ever come as far as my house, so i was thinking of something with tread a bit more extreme that can offer traction thru deep snow?

something more like you would expect to see on an '4x4/off roader' rather than a car.

any ideas?

Hi GaZ

the Tyres listed should be fine as it is in the compound and fine tread detail that
make them suitable for snow and slush ( like you said in your first post).

People use these Tyres in the alps.

As said, just fitting winter tyres with the better compound and tread will make a BIG difference. Too chunky a tyre as used in off road rallying would not work well on tarmac, which is where they will spend most of their time... Heard good things about the Quatrac.
Depending on what width you are running during the Summer going to a narrower higher ratio tyre also helps as I found out on mine. From sliding around on all fours with 205/50 to almost full throttle take off (with the KV) on the 185 Winter tyres in fresh snow and slush etc...

If the Quatrac and Optimo 4S are good enough for the Swiss and the Austrians, then its good enough for me.

And these two tyres are 4 season, so they run all year round too. The Optimo 4S has had very very good reivews, hence why I am looking at it in preference to my normal fetish for Vredesteins (who I think have gone bankrupt???)

Can't get the Hankook Optimo 4S in the UK apparently, my normal tyre place spoke to Hankook UK today.

The Quatrac 205/60R15 is £50 + VAT (all in, balanced, fitted, disposal, valve)

I then started looking at the Snowtrac (Wintrac is not available in my size), the Snowtrac 2 was £78 + VAT and the Snowtrac 3 was £88 + VAT.

Amanda, I will get you a price for your 20 inch tyres if you like, just as a comparison. In Bristol.

I think I will get the Quatrac, and some Comtrac Winter for the T4 Caravelle on some replacement steel wheels.

ok, i'll not bother with an off road tire then.

But I don't really think i'm after an 'all season tire' because I have sport/summer tyres on my 16" borbet A's, and was thinking of fitting dedicated snow tires to my 14" ronals simply for winter use. is 185/60 a good size?

And is it worth buying Vredestein Snowtrac 3 ? instead of the cheaper Snowtrac 2?

You pays your money and you takes your choice:

I am looking for tyres for my 100 quattro, and can't justify nearly double the price.

i bought a set of mud and snow tyres and ronal rims for my wr and then put H&R springs on that are lower so they no longer fit in the arches safely so they will be put in the for sale bit soon.195,60,15 on 6"ronals.
