I agree with you BasilNZ. I have seen and been driven in an Audi R8. The words fantastic came to mind. It left my Porsche 911 (when i had one) truly beaten.

I guess if Audi are foced to make not as good cars, this will force the value of the classic (Real) Audi's up?

I disagree... Audi is strong enough to tell Porsche to piss off if they think they can stop Audi developing better cars than themselves....and on the racetrack as well.

Porsche NEEDS help from the VW group and also technology sharing will benefit all concerned....so WHY would Porsche want to rekindle relationships with Audi and Merc and want to do an up to date versions of the RS2 and the Porsche inspired big Mercs if Porsche wants to reign in Audis runaway sucesses?

I have a 1/43 orange quattro spider concept car... is that why Audi didnt build it? didnt know that.

I really cant see Porsche un doing all the success and effort achieved by Audi (group) Lamborghini etc , if anything Porsche WOULD benefit with this know how...besides Porsche has their own loyal followers anyway so if Porsche can use and develop new technologies and keep costs down in developments with Audi using "inhouse" components then I see that as a positive thing.Audi group would also benefit from having access to Porsche engineers as well if not already in place.
Audi makes alot of money for the VW group so..... if Porsche is taking over the entire VW group decisions I would be surprised and disappointed if Audi has its talents reigned in... JUST to make Porsche "look" better

Yes the R8 is one hell of a car, I have had a wee drive of 1 ... I see it as a cheaper alternative to the Gallardo and not a threat to the 911. The customer should have a choice of what car to buy and not faced with a situation that Porsche stops Audi from making rival cars....sad state of affairs if this is the case!!!

Its name branding at the end of the day, would rather you have a Porsche or Audi sat on your drive?

the 911 and the R8 for example appeal to different people for different reasons.

Sounds like Porsche has a Ford DNA strand present.... you can have any car you like and colour so long as its black and has a "Porsche" badge on it.

Porsche has a pretty slim niche market, the profit per unit maybe high compared to other manufactures profit per unit.

Unless your in a position to buy a 2 seater sportscar or a thumping great Cayenne then your limited to what Porsche to buy.

A 4 door Porsche is on its way but how many Panamera's are likely to sell worldwide? Facing the Aston Martin Rapide or a Lambo 4 door and a price tag of upwards of 150k they're not going to be on a Hertz forecourt any time soon.

Buying the VW group or taking control gives Porsche a big pay day so they can invest in future models and develop technologies further either in house or with VW group engineers.

By having "crap" models by the ton may give Audi the numbers advantage in sales per year... people may not want all the gizmos on a car and are happy with a basic box on wheels, the more complicated it is the more it is to fix.....

People buy Audi for its quality, refinement, engineering leadership etc.... likewise for Porsche.
I hope that Porsche doesnt bugger up everyone elses talents just to try and shore up their own efforts.... and with a recession on they're going to suffer in the sales dept,so needs a "partner" to tide them over IMHO.... so keep it in the VW/Porsche "family "
