Audi Germany advised me that my C3 'should' be OK to use E10, assuming it was all original. Not an answer that filled me with confidence so I will use super as long as it remains E5 and I can get it. The extra cost is negligible in view of how little I use the car and the potential damage.
So far there is one Jet petrol station nearby that sells Super. The official publicity suggested that petrol stations with a high turnover would be required to have at least one pump offering Super, but I'm not sure every retailer will follow that. My two nearest Sainsbury's stations converted to E10 weeks ago but only one has a Super pump. ![]() My daily driver is an E46 and BMW says E10 is safe to use in all their vehicles, regardless of year of manufacturer, so I will chance E10. Nevertheless, I rarely fill up more than once a month, so I hope I won't need to use fuel stabilizers. If I do I hear the FBHVC recommends those made by Millers Oils. I guess time will tell us more. Most drivers have no idea of E10 or care about its implications. If they find themselves having to spend more though, then that may change... |

There is a lot of information that we all read and look at on the Internet, in the USA they have hed e10 for years and have many older cars they don't seam to have problems I have seen parts from one car say a 2000 mx5 which is not recommended to run on e10 then the parts from a 2007 which will ,they are the same same part numbers .Is this all hype to get us to replace are old cars and bikes personally I will use what is available at the pump as they have started that e5 super will be gone within 5 years.

E10 is supposedly not as efficient (if that's the right word) so some power loss and not as good mpg. Anyone confirm if this is actually the case?
I use super in mine anyway so hopefully be ok for a few more years yet!!

Yes, I hear the government will review Super's availability in 5 years. If there is a demand they may allow it to continue, but I suspect retailers may give up on it before if they aren't selling enough.
I've heard about E10 being used in the states for some time. They even have E85 ![]() I tried contacting the Audi Car Club of America to glean some knowledge from them, but they have ignored me at every attempt.. How rude! ![]() France & Germany have had it for a while, but I can't find much on what they have to say. Maybe E10 isn't as bad as it sounds, but I will worry about that in 5 years time... I think Audi 5cyl engines with fuel injection should run on RON97-99 anyways - being higher compression engines.
My concern would be E10 fuel combability for carburetor engines. |

Ethanol in fuel attracts water, so corrosion, expensive repairs, have watched some scary videos online of E10 and scarier still so called flex fuels…
I am thinking (hoping) super will be around for a while yet, a lot of very wealthy people have a lot of very expensive cars in collections that have an appetite for it whether they are driven or not. Unless all these investments are just considered static pieces of art in future, I’m hoping this colours the judgement of future policy makers, both on the future use of older cars and availability of fuel for them.

Some of it will come down to lack of use. Even normal E5 starts to go off after 3 months or so.
I manage to cycle through a full tank fairly quickly - 2 fills a month typically on my 20v so the fuel won't get a chance to sit absorbing moisture.

Since the poxy pandemic we have really struggled to make any mileage on any of them, I doubt ours are making two full fills every 6-months. ( especially when the weather is perpetually shite and work is over demanding). I’ve put fuel stabiliser in the rallyrep and whilst it still runs and drives gawd knows what is going on inside the tank….

![]() The big potential problem with ethanol in petrol is that it will absorb moisture whereas petrol on its own doesn't. That water/ethanol mixture can turn acidic and may accelerate corrosion problems with brass and steel fittings so the best bet is to prevent water getting into the fuel system. That's difficult in a climate such as ours but it's the only answer really. ![]() |
