Porsche prices are bloody stupid if you ask me. At the moment, there is just no ceiling price on them. People seem to want them and will pay top dollar for them.

My mate bought a 1969 911 2.2S 9 years ago. He paid £15k for it.
Same car now would sell for around £90-£100k

At the same time, I bought a 912 for £3500. I sold it 18 months later and thought I'd done well when I got £5250 for it.
Now, it would sell for around £22-£25k

Selling a car for a profit Coxy? you will be marked out as the antichrist if your not careful

In the case of the SWB, not a car I could ever afford in my lifetime so I wont lose much sleep over what collectors pay but I will be happy that to note that these prices will eventually filter down as our road versions become rarer. After all if you cant afford to own a UR quatrro then a coupe GT aint a bad option and so it goes.

And at the end of the day are most of us on here not car collectors of some sort in any case?? I'm certainly quite happy that my old gal is worth a lot more than I paid out for her all those years ago and although not bought as a cash investment it certainly has beaten anything I would have made in the bank (minus running and resto costs) and I've had some fun to boot.

I'll be interested to see where the original V8 R8's bottom out.

and then, how long it will take till the prices start rising again.

12-15 years seems the norm for modern cars

Do you think the C3 will ever see a gain in values?

Probably not. no more than a good type 43 is now.

There are obviously collectors who actually like cars, and know how they work, that's not what I meant. Cars as a temporary safehaven is what I meant. The dramatic price rises in the last ten years are entirely due to flight of capital, from other areas that previously gave a safe return, but now don't.

Just as happens in the art world, from time to time. But these transient investors never stay put, they'll move on to property, arms, genetically modified lollypops, whatever makes them the best return, eventually.

If I owned a sport quattro, I'd be selling it now. 'Be fearful when others are greedy' etc.

there will be precious few current model audis that will be classics in future when you consider the kind of prices that audi charges for replacement parts. a pal of mine bougt a nice 56 plate s4 and was quoted anything from £2500-£3000 for replacing the rattly chain tensioners in the v8 engine!!

a prime example is the lovely s8 - you can pick up a nice one for £1200!! what did that cost new?? nobody wants them. what a waste.

You're absolutely right, every time I see an S8 pop up on ebay they always go for really cheap and I am so tempted only for the fact that I already have 2 luxury saloons. The misses would bate me over the head with something solid if she arrived home after work some day to find an S8 sitting in the drive. She came up with a deal about 3 years ago when I started banging on about buying an A8/S8, she says 'tell you what, if you buy an A8 you have to get rid of the 200'. I looked at her blankly for about an hour and then said, 'ah.... no. I'm being buried in my 200'.

I'm still going to have both.

Its not really fair to compare a Quattro to Delta S4's, T16's, 037, RS200 etc.. as they were all 100% purpose designed tube chassis specials, whereas Quattros, even SWB versions were, effectively, modified production cars with steel chassis etc.. they even retained mcpherson strut suspension.. personally I think they can only be compared favourably with the Manta 400 and Nissan RS240

Its a shame Audi never got to use their own mid engine group B car..
