Damn.... Always wanted an Audi 100 but this has turned out to be a bit of a potential disaster. Should have done my research and sought out a manual car I guess.

Thanks for your words guys - good to know somebody else out there feels my pain

I think rather than spend any more money on it, I'll run it until it dies and then I'll initially offer it out on Ebay as a donor car. It's in such near-perfect condition, I'd like to think somebody would use it to keep another 100 alive. They're beautiful cars.

Failing that, it'll be off to the scrapyard.

In the meantime, it drives perfectly - smooth engine, gearbox and lovely ride. I drive it gently and with respect so hope it'll last a little while longer. I'll enjoy the experience whilst I can! Really is a childhood dream come true to be in possession of a slice of motoring history!

Thanks again

James

Run it until it dies then buy Coxy's manual car.

They are truly awesome cars. So quiet refined and comfy.

there could still be a chance that its not the gearbox though.. or they put the cv joint on the wrong side.. i'd see how it fairs as you say for the next while. having said that i have an auto avant....and the gearbox if fecked at 112K.... it still works though.

Crap design.
Point is very important - to do "economical repair" instead of "economical scrapping". I can't see reason what would be wrong with box from car that was running fine and scrapped because owner didn't wanted to repair some small damage. Crap design? I hear something like that for the first time - all known to me automatic - manual [latvian] conversations happened just because average latvian wants manual gearbox, so, for example, one such person even tried to sell good working AT from his B3 coupe in latvian audi forum, and nobody wanted it even for scrap metal price, [something about 40 quid ] and ex-german cars usually has much higher mileages than briton cars... Or maybe service manual says that gearbox doesn't need oil change and so british garages don't change it, while latvians at some point change it, thereby prolonging gearbox's life. Failure of some bearing may happen in every box, regardless it's MT or AT Does it makes manual boxes crap design as well?

The 3 speed auto is a well known crap design where the seal between the diff (with diff oil in it) breaks and allows the diff oil and the auto transmission fluid to mix. Which is bad news for the auto gearbox part.

Common problem.

Upgrade it to 4 speed Or it has the same problem?
When did they changed 5 pot AT to 4 speed? Wasn't that somewhere in mid-eighties?

C3 was 3 speed. My 1991 car was 3 speed. C4 was 4 speed.

Interesting. B3 4 pot has 3 speed, 5 pot 4 speed, only I can't remember was the 4 speed for all model run 1986 - 1991, or was it introduced somewhere mid run...

I've read this a lot and certainly heard of more autobox failures than manual ones. Took some bits off a scrap one once - autobox had failed around 120000.

My 100 auto has done 173000. I keep wondering when it is going to fail.
I have to keep topping up the fluid, but where does it go? There is no evidence of major leaks underneath.
I checked the final drive level, wondering if ATF would come pouring out. But no, I was able to squeeze a little gear oil in.

Oh, and there were 4 speed auto Type 44s - I've never come across one but they are listed on Vagcat.

The mechanical droning/whining sound is getting worse on mine... louder as the miles go on. I'm only driving it a couple of times a week though.

Strangely, the gearbox still operates fine. Smooth gearchanges and no hesitation.

Just a lot of noise!
