Default Type 85 Audi 90

Hi again!

So, being new to Classic Audis, I was wondering if someone could explain a few things!

Firstly, we have bought a type 85 Audi 90 Quattro. What does type 85 designate - I can find lots of info on the type 85 coupe - is this basically the same car, different body?

I have also heard that the 80 of around the same time is basically the same car, but the 90 is more luxurious? Is that right? And does that mean that 80 -> 90 parts are fairly interchangeable? We will need quite a few various bits and pieces, handles, bumpers, trims etc - and with the 90 being rarer, I was wondering if we could use parts from slightly different models?

Thanks in advance!!

Chas

Yes, you are right, the 90 evolved from the 80. The pre-facelift 80 CD and 80 quattro with 5 cyl engines evolved into the 90 CD and 90 quattro in the facelifted (sloping glass, bigger rear lights, nicer dash etc) versions. After the facelift the 80 designation was restricted to 4 cyl models only, and the 90 desination was for 5 cyls - until the early 90s when the V6 came along and they all became 80s again.

Coupes and quattros are Type 85 which is derived from the chassis no. You will see the fol in the chassis no: WWWzzz85z... Oddly the front wheel drive Coupe GT is a Type 85, but a front wheel drive saloon is Type 81. The Coupe quattro, 90 quattro and Ur-quattro are all Type 85.

Plenty of 80 and Coupe parts will fit, but others won't. But they are a good source for bits.

Wink Differences

As mentioned the type 85 relates to the series 2 square shaped cars after the mild facelift, there are many parts that are common to both but most are slightly different, Cv joints are different between the 80 and 90 as are springs and dampers to accomodate the different weight of the 4 & 5 cylinder engines as are most items in the engine bay. Brakes are similar but again differences between 2wd and quattro. Handles are the same with the 90 and coupe merely having a stainless insert. I expect a lot of the trim is different depends on which bits of trim you are talking about.
Welcome to the joy of chasing around finding spares for older Audi's that the dealers want to forget...

Good to see another old 90 is going to be looked after. I wonder how many of these are left on our roads - under 900 sold in total!
Cheers
Chris

Well... There was typ81q as well... Restricted to some engines At last in LHD version. Typ81 was, in most cases, pre-facelifted models.

Yes, it was my intro to quattro .
Briefly they sold the two types in the UK ( 1986 only iirc ) 1.8 4 cylinder and 2.2 5 cylinder
I had a type 81 quattro ( looking the same as my type 81 1.8 Sport anyway ) except that it was all type 85 underneath !
The basic shell was the same as the UK 90s , 108 pcd wheels not 100 pcd, with type 81 interior and type 81 bumpers, grill, lights. I ran it for about 18 months until I did a driving day with Audi and the series 4 2.8 quattros......... I was smitten. Took me about six months to find one though as only about 93 were ever sold in the UK.
By the way Hi Chas.........over here from TSN !!
