A good friend of mine in Germany who runs a company called Astec GmbH from Forchheim in Germany has recently restored this car for Audi Tradition and it's now on display at the museum, if anyone fancies a trip out there.
Here are a few snaps of the beastie............drool! |

Driven by Hans Joachim Nowak and Willi Bergmeister in the European Touring Car Championship. The car is based on one of the original bodies that were specially built for motor racing at Audi's Ingolstadt plant. Rebuilt by Astec GmbH from Forchheim in Germany. The 1600 cc engine with front-wheel drive developing 194 bhp at 7500 rpm was good for a top speed of 230 km/h. Although the Audi cars competing in the circuit events were raced exclusively by private drivers, the successful teams of Bergmeister/Nowak and Seikel/Trint were supported by Audi works. After finishing as runners-up in 1979, they emerged victorious in 1980 to give Audi its first ever European Touring Car Championship title.

Cheers Coxy,
They move stuff around at the museum and sometimes it's hard to see all the cars you want, but we got lucky and saw the 80 GLE Touring car in July 2009. It was breathtaking to see it in the flesh. Great photos of yours by the way! |

You're along the right lines, as the guy who restored this used to work for Schmidt (Smith in English) Motorsport, Germany. Now runs his own company, though - Astec (very good guy indeed!)
