Now that is an expensive hobby!

Is there a race series for out of date touring cars?

In the UK they can be run within the LMA EuroSaloons race series - several Super Tourers appear out in that: Nissan Primersa, Honda Accords, Mondeos etc.

Someone has also just started to run an Ex Fench Champinship "SuperTourisme" ROC built Audi 80 in the NW Saloons series based largely at Oulton Park

Spot on!.........that is Jan Van Nierop. Here's a report from Round 5, Oulton Park, June 20th 2009, plus a few others. A great result, especially considering it was his first race in years.

I tell you what. I have done four laps of Oulton Park in the 80 with Jan and it flippin goes. It will boost up to 600bhp. Very very smooth car and probably well capable of doing very well even by todays standards. These were taken a few years ago when QRSport had a bit of a shin dig at Oulton one cold damp December Thursday and took a few of the customers ( one being me) around the circuit. Tim ( Renn - Tech ), Jans ex partner also had their S2 Hill Climb car there too which was fun. Bit like chalk and cheese really.

I suppose that the trouble in using it nowadays in anger is the stress that the body would be subjected to. We have Jamie Watt Automotive near to me and they had, a couple of years ago admittedly, a Porsche 993 Le Man car and that was a year old, had done all the races in the series and the shell was scrap unless a vast amount was spent rebuilding the seams back up. Hard to believe really.

At professional level I think you may be right (although I think the phrase "scrap" is way over the top) but at Club level, which is the level that this 80 is being raced at now I don't think that is an issue. The biggest problem will be sourcing the bespoke spare parts. I have a an ex Work Toyota Group N race Saloon (ex Julian Bailey) with a touring car standard shell and cage built by Dave Cook Racing Services - Its 15 years old but I defy any club driver to get in that and think its "baggy".

I know what you mean Andy but those were Jamie Watts words not mine.....it looked lovely and gorgeous to me. But he said for it to viable to race again in the next years series it would need re-shelling. He also had a car under his charge, another 993, that was two years too old to be in a current series and five years too young for the classics. The chap that owned it had just paid 245k for it and that needed some extensive work.
