Carpet Dye - where can you get it from?
I want to revive the carpet in my old Audi, it's stained and faded. I'm going to take it out, clean it and then I want to re-dye it medium blue (it's light blue at the mo). Does anyone know where you can get carpet dye - I assume for nylon.

Be interesting to see how it's done.
It's pretty easy with modern grey and black carpets though. Snorky has the same problem with the carpets in his Coupe on the drivers side. The carpet is blue but has faded to an almost pale yellow. |

Okay, here is A solution... You can buy a dye from the USA which you dilute and spray on the carpet, it's colourfast etc - available in 20 different colours $9.95 from http://www.goestores.com/catalog.asp...&DeptID=198128 . Went through the order process however found that on top of the $30 postage there is a $20 money tranfer fee! My inlaws are in the US so I thought they could bring it back but of course liquids are a no-go and if it burst in their luggage I wouldn't be popular!
So anyone want to go in with me and order a few bottles? |
aren't liquids ok if it's in the main suitcase??
It's only a no-go on hand luggage. |
I don't think they would be happy to have it in their main luggage - it would make everything a lovely blue colour if it burst!
|
If they pack it right it will be fine in main baggage, its only an issue on carry on luggage

or just wrap it in a pair of Levi's! Nowt wrong if blue dye gets spilled on them really!:p |
Have to agree, I spend a lot of time in the US best thing to carry liquid bottles in suitcases are zip lock bags (readily available in most US kitchens), as Coxy says you can always double bag it! :)

I would like to think I could talk them into it but I'm already getting them to bring back some other Audi stuff (Audi 5000 OEM ignition leads only available in the US!) and don't want to push it.

Incidently, the August 1980 edition of Car magazine not only has a ur on the front but has a group test of the 200T, 280E and 728i. Cracking read. I'm thinking of working my way through the 80's in old magazines! |
So seriously what if I ordered a few bottles? You would need to choose your colour off the website. The cost would be $9.95 per bottle plus $25 (half the cost of the postage and money transfer)...so approimately £17 (TBC) + a few pounds to post it to you. The more people who order the cheaper. Obviously I don't know whow good the product is but my Canadian collegue used to be a detailer and says it's good??
...and thankyou for your comment about my 5T...don't suppose you would like to buy the 5E featured on my website? |
Can you dye nylon? Isn't the colour actually in the nylon (i.e. plastic) fibres?
Imagine trying to dye fishing line, same stuff. I don't think it'd take. |
Okay, I've been contacted by a guy through Petrolheads who will sell a dying kit for £16.50, he has light and medium blue + many more I believe. I can pass on his details if anyone wants. On the nylon thing...I don't know how it works but as long as it does... Normally you need to soak nylon in dye for 20 mins at 103 degrees - so I guess this stuff coats the nylon?

Ordered light and mid blue carpet dyes - I will let you know how it turns out (photos of before and after will be included of course!).
|
Hmmm IIRC audi still have blue carpets available........but you had better sit down when you enquire for the price:p

Got the stuff today - a light blue and a mid blue (in containers the size of a 35mm film). Mixed the powder into a gallon of warm water as instructed, added PH adjuster and colour fast stuff and off I went. Dipped the two side bits of carpet into the bucket and they came out blue (almost white before) - but the water ran off clear! Applied the dye to the rear capet - which was worse than the front and now it's blue again. Photo of before is below - after to follow...

I know Snorky will be awaiting the afters with baited breath!

Okay - the result wasn't bad - it did the job - the original blue wasn't far off believe it or not. I would recommend spraying it on and being a little more patient than me. I have a dark blue kit which I would like to sell - cost me £15 but I'll sell it for £10. Apparently the more or less water added will change the darkness.
