Exclamation Electric Climate Control Problem

Please Read. This is in my 89 audi 200 quattro

It started with it just turning off when it was on auto when it hit the temp I want then not turning back on. It was doing weird things like if I punched the steering wheel it would turn back on and when I was turning left it would turn on but when I start to go straight it would turn back off. Then eventually there would be a buzzing sound under the driver side speaker when I had it on auto. It was trying to keep it on I could hear the fan speed going up and down.

So is there anything under the driver side speaker that controls the climate control?

yes the control unit is up under the passenger side of the dash on rhd models
but the haynes book says it' passenger side on lhd models too
there are connections relating to it in the birds nest under the fuse box though

Old climate control are notorious for developing bad connections in control units. I probably will try to get one for my B3 [for free or for symbolic price], because I'm familiar with soldering iron, so if I will get one that doesn't work properly, I will to fix it Ppls who are familiar with audis but not with eletronics sometimes replace old climate controls in B3 and C3 with ones from B4 and C4, respectively.

I'm presuming you mean that your blower stops running, or do you mean the display goes blank?

Had a problem in both my 89 200 quattros, it was the blower motor brushes failing to make contact with the armature. If I went round a bend (can't remember which direction now), there was enough play in the blower motor bearings to allow the part of the armature which hadn't been subjected to 250,000+ miles of brush wear to allow contact, but going straight and it would stop again. If I was parked and started the engine, I had to lift the hood and bash the top of the blower housing to get it to run so it would demist the window before I could drive off. After not being able to source a replacement (didn't know about the C4 system swap option), it eventually packed up completely. I didn't have anywhere to store her to fix later so I had to sell the car to another enthusiast for restoration. It broke my heart.

Yes I mean the blower shuts off. What are these system swaps and where would I get one?

I'm afraid I don't know myself, only going by what previous poster MSH made reference to. I'm not confident that a blower from a C4 would fit though.

The other alternative, if it can be confirmed that the cause is worn out brushes on the blower motor, is to have a competent auto-electrician fit some new brushes. I don't recall seeing brushes listed as a separate item in the Audi parts catalogue but the motor itself isn't made by Audi anyway so I'm sure an auto-electrician worth their salt would be able to sort something out.

Good luck.
