Anyone know how the windscreen replacement companies cut the sealant holding the windscreen in? as I may have found a screen but will have to take it out myself

I don't know anything about replacement companies, I removed rear glass from my former A80 using bike brake cables at first, but these proved to be weak, then someone gave me advice to use wires from handbrake cable, turned out to be good, needed 4 or 5 of them to complete job [1/3 was done with three bike cables]. With help of friend, because one must be inside car and one outside. Of course, part of sealant remains with glass, so it must be removed with sharp knife and some chemicals after that.

MSH, you found bike cables a bit weak? I once tried using mig welding wire
![]() After much swearing, lots of broken wire, and very sore hands, my paitence wore thin and I accidently broke the screen ![]() So yes, I do know the screen can be cut out with wire, what is more worrying is that the chrome / rubber edging strip round the screen would be destroyed by the wire? Can / does this have to be removed first? The front screen is broken and needs replacing, but also the w@nk3rs who resprayed the car before I got it must have hit bare metal and not primed it properly as rust is starting to get in round all the bonded glass, as is rainwater So both screens and quarterlights are going to have to come out![]() With this much glass to remove you can see why I want to be doing it right, don't want another broken screen |

I didn't want to spend more bike cables because I can use them on bikes
With first one I managed to cut one of shorter sides + half of long side, with second 5 cm, with third 10 cm, then it was enough for me With handbrake cable wires it went faster and looks like one cable can be enough for 2-4 screens, depending on luck To hold wire I used two pieces of wood. Two ppls which I asked for advise told me that these rubber strips must be bought new when replacing screen anyway ![]() If principle of quarterglasses on C3 is the same as on B3, then it will be pain in arse to cut these two out. Without proper advice I wasn't able to properly remove two pieces of steel that is between bodyshell and quarters. |

to cut out a bonded windscreen u need 1 of these
a cheesewire ![]() ![]() and or a cold knife ![]() insert the cheesewire through the glue of the screen and saw away but make sure you remove any interior trim it might touch because its very easy to saw a lump out of the pillars or the dash or just insert the coldknife round the edge of screen and pull once the screen is cut out remove all the old glue with a razor blade or scraper from both the screen and the body. once its all removed apply windscreen glue primer.then get your windscreen glue this should come with a nozzle that has a V shape cut in it so when you apply the glue with the nozzle at 90degrees to the screen it comes out in a vertical bead.Put your trims around the edge and the screen is ready to go back in again. you can buy online from Random windscreen tool place where i found the pictures or look up your local charles pugh or laddaw winscreen supplies its probably worth going to a scrap yard 1st and having a sneaky play on a screen that isnt your own ![]() HTH Made that sound easy ![]()

Thanks Baldy, I think it will be the coldknife, as the cheesewire would distroy the surround. Ive just found out that a mate knows the manager of the local auto windscreen branch, I'll have to see if he can borrow one for me
![]() And no shortage of old sh1te to practice on round here |
