Default 80q 1.8 K-jet upgrade?

Just hypothetically speaking if I wanted to upgrade the engine of my 80 quattro (currently 112bhp) to say 150+ bhp, what would be my best options?

Cylinder head, turbo, G-lader, engine transplant??

Any ideas or suggestions welcome... the car is nice but with a little more oomph it would be even nicer...

IMHO, you could spend quite a few bucks on that engine to get it up to around 150bhp. Would it not be better/cheaper to get a second hand Mk2 Gti golf 16v engine to transplant?(If that's easy enough?) You'd have 139bhp to start and that would be easier to get up over the 150bhp.

Sure someone else will have a better idea though.

A mk3 Golf GTI 16V engine would be even better - 150bhp as standard. Either use the K-Jet system, or transplant the entire Digifant fuel/ignition system into it. Obviously you'd need the wiring loom and all the ancillaries (ECu, fuel rail, inlet manifold, pipework, etc) to suit.

It's the ABF engine code you need, so either Mk3 Golf GTI 16V or the Seat Ibiza/Cordoba GTIs, they're the same engine.

You'd probably need to change the oil system as whether you use a Golf 2 or Golf 3 engine you're taking a transverse engine and making it fit longitudinally.

There's also the 2.0 16V Passat/Corrado engine which is only 136bhp but uses the same height block as the 1.8s. The ABF engine is 15mm taller overall.

Thought about the later versions too, but I would have guessed the transplant from transverse to longtitudinal would be easier with the older engine as per the current version 8 valve already there?

Hmm, all those multi-valve engines are OK at the top end but they are not very "grunty" (1.8T excepted) and I like "grunty"

I have thought about a G60 or even a VR6 (both available from Corrados) but the latter is perhaps a difficult and thirsty conversion...

I even wondered about grafting the G-lader supercharger onto the existing engine - VW did something like that on the Golf....

Well, I remember problems which encountered one guy who installed vw 9A engine [the same Audi 6A, only transverse] in B3 - sump, exhaust starting from manifold, fuel lines, wiring harness, filter box and some other parts that must be swapped from existing 6A/ACE engine.

VR6 isn't difficult swap, if prefabricated parts are used, but it's expensive one - take a look @ www.034motorsport.com
Forget about putting g-lader on your existing engine - that won't work out. DZ engine's existing primitive ignition can have problems even at it's stock form, so 98E must be used, with forced induction and the same compression it would destroy that engine...
Why not 1.8 20vt?
