I don't think you'll make any massive gains, but you will improve throttle response with a modified airbox and decent filter, just make sure it's getting cold air, not hot. Then, go for decent ignition, leads, plugs etc... Then look at the exhaust, that'll help...

Taking the revs to 6.5k is about all you'll get, (rotor arm change), this'll probably make no extra power without a cam change though.

Decent oil, decent oil adative (slick 50 etc), clean injectors.

Run 75/25 Super to standard Unleaded, octane booster (max dose) fuel injector cleaner (minimum dose)...

Think good air, strong fuel, bright spark....

Oh... And sling as much weight out as possible....

Not worth removing the rev limiter unles you change the cams etc as the later 5 cylinders in the series 3 cars ran out of puff after about 5700rpm anyway. well worth removing the CAT on the exhaust, perfectly legal on an 89 car. ALso as stated, decent fuel, decent plugs and leads decent filter and taking a chunk out of the bottom of the airbox should not make any difference to running/ starting unless you pulled something off in the process. Chopped the bottom of mine and added a stainless chute to guide cool air in. Good luck
