Noisy Power steering pump? :(

I'm 94 % sure that the god awful noise coming from my engine bay is the power steering pump.

the steering seems OK(ish) but the noise the pump makes is irritating.. makes my car sound knacked! and i hate it with a passion!

Anyone else got this problem? it seems worse in the VERY cold weather, and my old CQ sounded even worse.

is there anyway of shutting it up? Have i perhaps got too much tension on the drive belt for it? or is a refurbish / replacement the only way to shut it up! ?

Because other than that the engine sounds nice

Of course you've checked the fluid level? air in the system makes them noisy.

Check the colour of the fluid, if it looks brownish means the fluid is 'tired' and therefore absorbs air more readily.

Drain and refill the power steering will help, although dreadfully messy job.
