Default What's she worth

Aight guys looks like it might be time to sell my 89 Coupe just looking for info on what she’s worth. Currently has not MOT that expired in 2013 and it has been driven since. It has been started over the years but the cold weather this winter killed the battery and I’ve not had chance to charge one and get it started since xmas time.

I have most if not all service history although theres not really much there as the car has spend the best part of the last 28 years off the road. Milage on the last MOT was 61,991 the car itself will have a couple of thousand more miles on it as It was driven for the rest of the year although not much.

So on to the bad points drivers seat frame is snapped I had this welded back up a few years ago and it snapped again so a repayment seat will be required or it can be welded again. On the last MOT it had a few advisories they are as follows.

N/s/f seat does not fold forward
battery insecure (left the bolt in my garage as I had been disconnecting the battery while the car was off the road).
drop link bushes perished
Exhaust corroded (had the middle box cut out and a straight pipe welded in years ago by wabtec)
Fuel pipes corroded
Fuel filter corroded
Underbody corroded (I was told it just needed a new coat of sealant)
Oil leak from engine bay (this was the rocker cover gasket which was done at the same time as the MOT)

Rear wiper doesn’t work (just the usual probably needs stripping and cleaning and should work fine)
Has a small dent on the rear quarter which can be seen in the pics.
It also needs the tracking done on the wheels I knew about this before I put it away but figured there wasn’t much point doing it as I knew it was going away for a while.
Rear lights need resealing as would be expected on any coupe of this age. (I never bothered to fix it because I never drove it in the rain and it has always been garaged).

It has a few subtle mods.
It’s been lowered all round (was like that when I got it)
Badge removed from the front grill also had the rear badges removed and painted and the badges on the front quarters removed filled and painted.

I have a box of spares some original parts that have been swapped and loads of bits and pieces I removed from an 80 that I kept as spares.

Anyway on with the pictures just trying to figure out what its worth before I let her go. Needs must and all and I really could do with a more practical car that I can use every day.

Here are the pics I took last time I had her on the road back in 2012/2013. I know she would be worth more if I got her an MOT but I really don't want to go to the trouble of getting insurance etc its just an added expense and I would rather sell to an enthusiast who can do the few bits she needs doing themselves.

Car looks familiar, have you had it for sale recently?
That's a nice looking coupe with not many miles, it would boost it's value if it were MOT'd??.....could you insure it for MOT purposes and then cancel it?.....I think most insurance companies have a 14 day cooling off/cancellation period??
Is it 2.2 engine yes?

It has low miles in it's favour that's for sure, but no MOT isn't so good.
Condition looks good, it carries the extra painted bits off well in my opinion. Some close up pics of the modified bits might confirm for some that it's been done well(hopefully).....or not?

I'm sure others here will be able to advise on value?

Cheer John last time the car was for sale was back in 2009 which is when I purchased it. Apart from the few bits I have mentioned the paint work is about as good as you would ever get for a 28 year old car without having the whole thing resprayed. The cooling off period with insurance might be worth a look the only thing is I know if I MOT it and insure it I will end up keeping it till winter and probably stick it back in the garage for some more years lol. Will have a look and try and dig out some old pics. It is indeed a 2.2 KV Engine.

Heres a few more pics where you can see the paint that was done on the rear where the badges where removed same guy painted the wing mirror and removed the Audi badge on the front arches they where all done at the same time in preparation for VWNW 2010. Looks like my little girl was too busy modelling next to the car for me to get many clear shots lol

In 10 years time when your wee girl looks at those pictures and says "what happened to the coupe?"..................that's when you'll think "damn, wish I'd kept that!"

Is holding onto it an option?

I hear you dude and that's part of the reason for wanting to let it go as is, I know once I put an MOT on it I'm not going to want to let her go. Going to go see it and take a few pics tug on my heart strings some more lol you never know I may end up putting a ticket on it using it for the summer then selling during the winter when I would normally have it garaged anyway.

If you MOT it, use it a bit, wax up the paintwork, take some nice pictures and generate some interest here then you'll be in a better position for selling than you are now?

Underbody corroded. Now there's a phrase that covers a multitude of sins and I certainly wouldn't expect an MOT advisory if it only needs resealing.

As it stands I don't think the low mileage is a factor it's just an MOT failure that's been off the road for over three years and will require recommissioning as well as MOT repairs so it's spares or repair really. I'm prepared to stick my head over the parapet FeaRThiS and say your looking at £250-350.
On the road with an MOT however, the low mileage is a good selling point and it's a good looking coupe, so you could be looking at over a grand but with the amount of work involved to get it to that stage you probably won't be looking at much of a return.

Looks like that is going to be the plan dude may as well drive her through the summer and when I park her up for winter as always I may or may not advertise her.

First things first it hasn't failed any MOT the car was in full working order when I put her off the road for winter as I do every year. As far as the corrosion on the underside goes after a conversation with the mechanic he told me it was very minor and the underside just needs to be resealed he only put it on there due to the overall condition of the car and wanted to give me the heads up. When I purchased this car 8 years ago the price was considerably more than a grand and there where multiple people trying to buy the car, I was second in line after the first person lost his deposit due to not being able to get finance (we where in the middle of a recession). The mechanic who did my last MOT offered me more than what I paid for it after he did my MOT so I think maybe seeing is believing in this case. Until recently (white coupe on eBay @ £10k) I had never seen a coupe that even comes close to the condition of mine.
