Default thermostat 1.8 injection

This is for my 80 Sport with power steering, i suspect coupe 1.8 with the DZ engine are the same.
It looks as if you have to disconect the power steering pump to change th e thermostat???

The stat appears to be 'hidden behind the pump with virtually no clearance ( although I have not yet crawed underneath to examine closely..

I have a new stat but before I spend several hours ........

Anybody able to confirm?

Thanks.
I've also asked on Audifans but no replies......

Nopower steering on my DS coupe but you should only have to remove the mounting bolts to move the pump out of the way

thanks for that.
Yes I've had a much better look this morning, in good daylight, and it looks as though I need to remove two bolts, loosen or remove the tensioner arrangement and the pump should then swing up out of the way sufficiently.
Did you use to live in Priestwood years ago ??

Ah I thought so.....

Well it took me about 1.25 hours, including undoing the 'pivot' bolt that may or may not be a pivot but it sure was a pig to line up again otherwise it would have been under an hour including getting it up on the ramps.
Now the temp guage goes off the top of the scale !
Actually the dash warning light has been flickering for a couple of weeks ( car SORN at the moment so
just when I warm it up.) I put it down to low coolant level but the guage was OK, so it may have air in it and need bleeding or the sender may have gone open circuit ( does that make the guage read maximum?).
Too dark now so I'll have another look tomorrow. Incidentally the new stat does not have any direction arrows on it, like the old one and the Haynes manual says aligne away from engine on 4 cylinder models.

You poss got an air lock, when i change my thermostat on my 80 it did take a while to bleed through.
If you remove coolant sensor multiplug and earth the wiring the guage should go into the red.If your coolant low and you have an air lock it will go into the red

More than likely an airlock the correct procedure for a type 85 is:

Slide the heater colntrol to hot.

Remove the bleed screw from the top of the radiator.

Remove the 3 screws holding the expansion tank and lift it up as far as the hoses will allow whilst topping it up until coolant flows out through the bleed hole in the rad.

Replace bleed screw

Lower and replace expansion tank.

Hope this helps....
