I am a big fan of the A8s.
But, and I am talking from experience, they have a lot of common issues/problems.
The A8 Sport/S8 are the ones to have, if only for the Recaro seats. They are superb.
I loved mine, but fook me, was it unreliable.

How long have you got? It will take some time.....

Mine was the A8 2.8 quattro Sport. An 02 Plate with full history etc in very good order. Or so it seemed. The gearbox was fine, however, I had issues with the Engine Management Light forever illuminating. The car was in at various Audi specialists, and none could sort the problem. Then there was the fuel pump going pop. Then there was the air con drains being blocked, so it was pissing water through the dash vents all over the lovely leather interior. Then there was the sensor for the Bi Xenon lights failing. Then there was problems with the interior lights occasionally not working. Parking sensors failed. Then there was the arms on the front suspension failing. Then there was the tensioner bolt failing, despite me having the timing belt done 10 months previously. To be fair, the garage who did the belt, obviously didn't change the tensioner bolt (bellends ). The list goes on and on.
Otherwise it was lush. A very high spec, more options than a lot of A8 4.2s/S8s. It was in a Special Order colour, Irish Green Pearl. A stunning colour.
It was the second most unreliable car I have ever had (and I've had several Fords). The worst was my A4 1.8T Sport. Utter shite.

Would I have another A8?
Damn right I would. This time I would defo go for the full fat 4.2. Despite being a top of the range car, there are still a lot of Options that were available. The electric rear sunblind is a must, as is Bose, Sat Nav is shite, but looks better than the standard head unit. Mine had a glass sunroof, which I prefer over the steel or solar sunroof. Heated rear seats are nice, the extended leather pack 3 is lovely, extra leather on the lower dash, door panels, and Alcantara headlining.
In my opinion, the A8 4.2 q Sport is nicer than the S8, as the S8 is a bit too hardcore for what is also a luxury car.
Racing Green (Ronin) and Aluminium Silver (the S8 in your link)are good colours.

Thanks for your in depth response, not a car you could work on yourself with a few spanners then like me old 200 which until her noisey diff ,has been very reliable for an old barge.

I forgot to add that my dad had an early one, a which was a bit rough compared to mine, but was 100% reliable in the two years he had it.
