Is it missing a return spring maybe, to keep it closed?

did you buy the bronze/brown one with a vinyl roof?

My guess is strip the carb as it's been sitting for a good few years and it needs a good strip down and rebuild 4v6 style!

I'm registered on E38, but my post count is about 3 or 4 !!!

I saw the car for sale on VZi (Volkszone) a couple of years ago.
Steve Denton had it at the time. Not sure whether he sold it on or kept it and sold it on to you?

I'm presuming you got hit with a little VW scene tax though!!

When it was for sale a couple of years ago it had the same problem as he couldn't get it to idle.
It's no major job stripping down and cleaning the carb. It won't be in the best of health after this long!
The chances are, if you get it running somehow, it won't be long till it conks out again!

Whats the carb type? OE pierburg? Or an aftermarket weber?

It might be the butterfly in the bottom, jamming against the barrel. It can happen if there is wear in the spindle.
