Default 1983 Audi 80 what to look for?

Im going to have a look at an 83 audi 80, i thinks its a 1.6, not bothered about the engine really as i have a garage full of 827's and ill probably fit a 2.0 or 2.1 in then end. my question is what should i look for?

what kills them off, its fairly cheap, but i dont want to spend a fortune keeping it going, as i have a mk2 GTi and play with quattros at the weekend just looking for a retro audi to use as a daily.

any advice welcome

Well... First of all - RUST In uk it's maybe not so actual. Just check what's going on under car
The others... U are planning to change engine, so engine isn't important... Check brakes and so on
Btw - are u talking about 5cyl engine swap?

Not really to much to go wrong on them. If it's still around after 25 years then it'll last for another 25 more years!
Taking the engine and box out of the equation, check the obvious, brakes, wheel bearings, check fuel line for leaks, and only real main rust area on these seems to be around the bottom of the A pillars around the windscreen.

if you have a quattro then snow on the road means fun!!! and it means you can still get to work unlike everyone else!

Bit of the old salt though and it plays havoc!

I can get to work with my FWD B3, and because it have FWD and because on road isn't so big traffic density
I just asked - I am from Latvia, on our roads use salt, so 25 years old audi, if not carefully maintained by owner, in most cases is bucket of rust like opel, or maybe even worse Most of B2's [only some] i had ever seen personally, was with serious rust, or with re-welded doorsteps and floor And there isn't any, which don't have rust at all - ok, maybe is - but u can buy one for, let's say, 2k pounds.
Also, i'm wondering about mileage of cars, seen in this forum - looks like brittish don't drive with their cars

This is about the Coupe quattro, but it is basically same shell as the 80...

http://www.kvquattro.com/buyersguide.html

The main thing I would add for the saloon would be rusted out boot floor from water getting in past rear lights.
