Exclamation fuel leak! (system overhaul)

Well, isn't that just typical.. Dad tells me to move my car so its under cover, so i back it down the muddy slope into the garage , he then notifies me there's a puddle of petrol where it was parked before. So i go to move it out again, & guess what.. it wouldn't bloody start! And it was stuck there because its too muddy to tow it out, & there is no room for me to jack up the car & fix the leak! T1TS!

That was the other day however, and its now out

It seems to be leaking around the fuel accumulator (non return valve?) When I say 'leaking' i mean pissing out everywhere !

(I wonder was this the cause of my worsening economy?)

I know them fuel pipes can become very hard like brittle plastic in that area.. so looks like a repair job is needed.

My mindset now is to make some improvements.

Firstly: I'm thinking Bosch 044 fuel pump

I believe this pump is a lot bigger than standard, so i'm thinking it will need a modified mounting? I know 20vcqdriver has this pump on his CQ so i'd like to see his solution and some pictures.

Secondly: the accumulator.. I understand its job is to maintain system pressure in the fuel line for easier starting once the engine is switched off.

Other than that, am i right in thinking it serves no other purpose?
I'm quite happy to keep it for better starting, BUT i'm wondering does it being there create a restriction/bottle neck in flow of fuel? Even if it is only by a small amount I'd be willing to junk it, if you think it's causing a restriction.

Or will removing it make fuel delivery worse?

Thirdly: I'm thinking of replacing the entire fuel lines under the car, whats best? metal pipe ?

OR steel braided rubber ? (i'm sure someone on here has done this)

Also, would an increase in diameter be of benefit or make matters worse?

Fourthly: Is it worth replacing the big canister type filter?

And last but not least: The CQ doesn't appear to have a small 'in-line' filter between the tank & the pump. Should I fit one?

Unless you are running big bhp then the 044 ain't needed, they are approximate £130 new. A standard pump will suffice , it's worth changing the canister and poss the accumulator if you have not done so for a while

Gaz you would be putting your money to better use by not fitting an 044, As your aware a fair few of the lads on S2 forum(with 20vt conversions) run standard ur pumps and have more than enough flow/pressure etc.

The accumulator only needs changing if its diaphram has perforated, With the screw on the back of it removed - if there is fuel in this rear section its time for replacement but at £140ish quid its an expensive one so find a second hand one.

Is the leak on the plastic sections of pipe from the pump to acc and from acc outlet large fuel filter/canister? is it the joins or pipework?

can you get a picture up of it?

I don't have any pics yet, & not sure exactly where it was coming from as it was running down the pipe work before hitting the ground. It was getting dark so i'll have to take a look when its light.

BTW do you still have the spare good set of braided metering head fuel lines that you said you had? I'm still interested in them, if you do. As fuel is seeping out from the rusty metal on them as well.

What would you class as 'big' horse powers? I'm thinking about maybe aiming around the 400bhp + ball park?

Have a chat with captain cannon , if your going that way then it's needed but that's down to how you are going about it tbh and not a given, if you are heading that way the only place to be is on the s2 forum and have a good dig round .
