Hi,
Gave my 80CL a clean and wax today, and wondered what to do about this? ![]() ![]() Is it a screen out jobby??? Or lift the rubber slightly and attack it as per this post: http://www.classic-audi.co.uk/forum/...ead.php?t=1161 Not too bothered about the appearance in the short term (1-2 years) as eventually I want to get it sprayed purple metallic flake. Just don't want to let it get too bad. steve |

Well, it doesn't look like its gone through there. You may in the short term be able to give a bit of a clean up and a bit of Kurust before painting over.
To repair stuff like this in the long term, the screen will have to come out. There will be corrosion underneath the window seal that you'll not be able to get to with the glass in. Left to fester it'll eventually go through and you'll have damp footwells etc. Difficult to weld here too. Don't leave it too long! |

try to find a solid shell and cut the panel for yours
it will be through the metal, normally twice as much rust under the rubber as is visible |

How much of the panel should I cut out of the scrap shell?

cut from top of pillar to bottom, that way you will have enough metal to play with

Yes, definitely screen out job to do it propery. At least it's easy on cars like that. You haven't got a bonded screen to worry about.
Best to catch it now before it gets worse. I took the tailgate glass out of my 1986 Fiesta because of less rust than that. It wasn't even showing from outside the car. Was only visible in the form of a slight rust stain inside the car. By sorting it now when it only needed rubbing down and painting with rust proof paint, I've probably saved the tailgate from needing welding repairs in a couple of years, and it's a shame to let them get that bad, especially old cars because they'll never make em like that again, more's the pity. |

If it's a 'keeper' then it is worth doing properly with screen out. There was only the slightest sign under the rubber on my Sport, but water started to get in the glove-box. On removing screen found more extensive rot - of course! Not great pics, but was done by garage to show what was hiding. Car had a screen just before I got it in 2005 & someone had made a token gesture at holding back the corrosion. Now sorted properly, so should last another 20 years!
