getting a bit hot

my b3 coupe has started to run hot , whats strange is it runs up to the fan cutting in < but the fan only runs for a couple of seconds ! i know there are a multitude of things to check , i have no coolant leak and i have backflushed the rad and thermostat seems to be working o.k any ideas i would be grateful before putting into a workshop
