Default B4 1.6 to PD130

Hi Folks,

Has anyone on here done a PD130 conversion? Looking to make the 80 more economical, I like the car and have kept it maintained so would like to consider an engine swap rather than just buying an unexciting factory tdi.

Just wondering what is involved, is the best way to find a passat and take everything out of it? Have the immobiliser removed?

Any help or pointers much appreciated

Passat is the way to go I believe...…...why not go the whole hog and go the CR engine route!?

Hopefully someone can advise regards the immobiliser but I suspect the easiest route would be to keep it?

Is it worth the effort though?...…..you should be getting an easy 35-40 mpg??

Is the CR a better engine? I know a bit about them all but never owned one.

I am getting around 35-37 to the gallon but at 60 miles a day it’s a sad reality that diesel might have to be the way forward. I am happy with the rest of the car so if it’s sensible money to convert I would keep it. 50mpg would be nice!

Just newer technology...…...but the 2.0 is just a "chip" away from 200bhp and oooodles of torque!

I think you can get a 1.6 common rail??……..that'd be economical for sure?

It would!

Have the injector issues with the 2.0 been sorted by now? Which would be the best donor car?

If this is the same 2 litre 16 valve turbo diesel BKD type used in most of the VAG cars, they are also used in Skodas, SEATs, etc.
The problem that does occur isn't the injectors, it is the variable vane turbo that gums up then sticks causing the system to go into "safe mode" followed by the engine management light coming on. Instant MOT fail, I am told.
My 12 years old former company Skoda's turbo failed at 160,000 odd miles and cost nearly £950 to have a new one fitted. It's a sod of a job as most of the back of the engine has to be tooken off and it's well past my skill-set! My tame garage thought I was daft to pay for a new one as the car probably isn't worth that but as it cost me nowt when I retired five years ago and has cost next to nowt to run for five years, I thought why not. It's a useful load lugger.
Now the turbo has been changed it goes like the proverbial off the chrome-plated shovel!

I maybe wrote that last post in a rush, back when these engines were new I remember the techs in the Audi dealer I worked in saying how Many injector seal jobs they were doing on the new CR 2.0 tdi. It may not have been a wide spread issue, after all the car is in the garage when something goes wrong!

This is sounding more tempting by the minute, can I lift the engine and box out of a donor and drop it in? My ADA gearbox would be very short geared for a tdi

The AWX 130PD is the engine to go for. Available in the Passats and B6 A4s

Mrs had a Passat and I had a seat Toledo with the AFN engine and they were both brilliant and super reliable. The Passat was traded in at 240,000 miles (still with its original clutch) on the scrappage scheme for a 2010 2.0tdi. That's broken down a few times since then and currently on only 120,000. She has just bought her dads AFN Passat he bought new in 2000, on 60k and full service history. She intends to keep that over her newer one. Its a much better built car, better on fuel and feels much quicker.
I wish I'd kept the Toledo as its one of the best cars I ever owned. I sadly sold it after 18 months ownership and 18k trouble free miles.
