there is no way a quattro box would/could be used, quattro boxes are much bigger and wouldn't physically fit.
I ran both for a while and the floor area in the 80 quattro was very tight against the pedals, not at all like my Sport and there was only about 6 months between them.
Sport gearboxes are relatively low geared, compared to other 80s.
I can look up the actuals ( I have the info filed away in the loft !! ) BUT i do remember that 5th is just under 20 mph per 1000 ( 19.8 iirc) so 3900 = 77mph
Simon's is a GL ?? iirc they were something like 23.6 mph per 1000, so 3000 =70.8.
I've always reckoned that a well tuned 1.9 or even 2.0 Sport would usufully be able to use a GL box for the higher gearing it could easily pull !

I'll get the chart I have out of the loft, but not tonight !!

yep ,
I owned a tornado red one for about 16 months, ran it alongside my 80 Sport.
The early 1990s.
Interesting comparisons ! I sold it to get a B4 2.8quattro.........uuuummmmmmm superb.

OK I've got the stuff out of the loft !!

80 Sport 80GLS

1st 3.455 4.61 mph per 1000 3.455 4.77 mph per 1000
2nd 1.944 8.19 1.789 9.2
3rd 1.286 12.38 1.133 14.56
4th .969 16.43 .829 19.90
5th .800 19.9 .684 24.09
( although I also have this listed as 21.23)
all with 4.111 final drives

you can see the descrepancy 80Sport....5th gear .800= 19.9 and GLS 4th .829 = 19.9 on the GLS...... a bit amiss there.......
These figures are from road tests at the time and presumably were figures from VAG ??
I know there are gearbox codes but I do not have that info. Sorry.

at the time the wheels were the original 14 inch ronals with 185 60 14, i can live with it having the short gearing its just after nearly 10 years of having the audi its not what i thought it was, in away i guess in races it will be quicker than standard but who wants to race all the time, i rather cruise with it but il have to drive at 60 mph coz it will annoy me at 70 mph, nice one!

Just get a louder stereo!!!

What oil do you have in? Is it the correct grade, as this should make the engine quieter.

Are the tappets noisy?

I used to drive my 80CL to plymouth and back (130 miles each way) in the days when it was 4 speed, you just get used to it.

OK, sell the car to me for £100 and be done with it!!!! Or fit a Coupe GT or GL gearbox.........
