nothing wrong with the smell of hypoid in the morning lads! Though it does smell bad if on the garage floor I guess. 75w90 you reckon ? for a 1988 A80Quattro with a tiny 1.8i engine ?

In english it would be something like that:
"Usually use SAE-75W90 or API-GL5, synthetic or mineral, only synthetic has better properties - in winter cold it doesn't become so thick and in summer heat so thin, so it does it's work better."

so you reckon synthetic GL5 is best at 75w90? I have no idea, but need to identify the best oil at the cheapest price & audi can't help with either aim

That chap also mentioned russian made mineral transmission oil that costs 4 ls [between 5 and 6 punds] 5l, but I don't think something like that is aviable in UK

thanks chaps - so consensus is for 75w90 oil for a daily driver A80 quattro box - synthetic if possible ? does it need to be hypoid/GL-4/GL-5 etc ? I don't know much about gear oil!

any thoughts on what's suitable oil for the rear diff ? looks like it's been weeping slightly, but no idea how long for. so if I have to top up, might as well change it when I can afford to

The same oil as in gearbox, of course.

thanks mikes2 - voice of reason as usual; am presuming from experience of filling your 88 quattro in your tagline. have seen advice somewhere else that GL-4 only for filling box, hence the question. easy to get hold of 75w90 GL-4 & GL-5 in UK ?
