GT5S 1981 - how to remove starter motor

I am in the strip down phase of a restoration.
I am stuck trying to remove the starter to gain access for removal of the auto gearbox.
All I can see holding the starter is a single ,half moon shaped catch? Not sure what to do next?
I have been advised not to try and lift the engine and auto gearbox as one.
