100 quattro 2.8 gearbox rebuild
Only joking. (may not be joking, as a last resort!)
Swore if I go back to an old daily I'll accept niggles, but I can't. It's the only damned noise the car is making that it shouldn't and it's an input shaft bearing noise. Question - are there any other compatible boxes I can use because I can't find one for sale and for the value of the car, for now, it's not worth having someone else fix it I don't think. No doubt the bearings are only a few quid but I got no gearbox tools, whatever ones you need, if you need any. I think the code is CAB and part number 01A 300 042 S, I think. Will any 2.8 quattro box fit or does anyone know if it's a particular ratio for the 100? (I mean matching the front and rear diffs) May well try a rebuild but never done one before, and my problem is I'll go replacing every bloody thing while I'm in there, which will add up! I'll end up with a new drive train before I'm finished. Thanks. Last edited by missfire; 20-02-17 at 11:20 PM. |

I think Audicoupeparts is about to start breaking an 80 2.6 Quattro! He might be able to give you some information!

Yep, I think all the v6 boxes are 01a, I just don't know about ratios, it's the last bit of the part numbers that change between cars and I don't know what they mean. Even wondering if I could use a B/C5 box but maybe a long shot, loads of them for sale though! I've read that some of the bearings are maybe NLA? You can get rebuild kits no bother for any other bl**dy gearbox!
Works fine, selects fine, sounds just like an input shaft noise, not there if you depress the clutch (when sitting still) louder the more torque you put into it (when drving) but silent on coast down selecting gears with the clutch depressed, which is confusing me, you'd think the rear axle and prop shaft would keep the whole thing spinning and whirring away, but maybe not. Will drop the oil and look for stuff in it! And get rid of the k&n. And look for heat shields loose, many strange potential sounds going on. Lol. Last edited by missfire; 21-02-17 at 12:37 AM. |

Could it be a dodgy, clutch release bearing?

No, would be nice, but that would start spinning up proper when you depress the clutch, this is doing the opposite. Totally silent when you depress the clutch. But on the plus side I just found the seven seat option is still fitted in the boot! The guy thought he had binned them, it actually IS the boot floor.
