If the piston is turning freely you can turn the tool by hand without inserting the plate, or use a 17mm socket/spanner. I like the plate if the piston is stiff to get moving though.

You can get LH and RH kits with a load of adapters for £12, pretty mad considering. Takes up a load of space if you just work on your own cars though.
