Well, it's taken longer to find the time to investigate this oil pressure issue than planned, but finally got to it this week.
The oil pressure sender was replaced with a (cheap) single connector switch (white 1.8bar) from my trusty local MF. Effect.............none! Ignition on........oil light illuminates Start engine......oil light goes out, then back on after ½ second Purchased a pressure gauge to confirm I do/do not (delete as appropriate) have sufficient oil pressure Cold start at idle.............. About 60psi immediately, settling to just below 50psi after a few seconds MASSIVE SIGH OF RELIEF Engine warm and at idle, oil temp approx 80-90° About 20psi And at approx 3000rpm A tad under 70psi. Cleaned out the original sender with WD40 (only thing to hand) as best I could. Also cleaned up the contacts and refitted. Effect............ Ignition on........oil light illuminates Start engine......oil light goes out, then stays out After drive over 5 miles didn't bring the oil pressure warning light on. Result. Now, A question for anyone that might know, more out of curiosity than anything else........ Parts diagrams show the correct part for a G chassis quattro to be the single connector switch 056 919 081 E as shown below My car is fitted with this, part no. 035 919 561 It's marked 0-5 bar, and to my mind is designed to supply a feed to a pressure gauge, which the Ur doesn't have. Anyone able to shed any light on this, is it just an incorrect replacement part? What do you guys with Ur quattros have fitted? Many thanks in advance. A good feed and a beer is now due to celebrate not having to commit to engine surgery.

Hi, the oil pressures that you have shown on the gauge at cold idle, hot idle and 3000rpm I would say is just the sort of readings you should have, as for your question about the oil pressure switch in my own cars I have the single spade end type oil pressure switch, as you say the other is for an oil pressure gauge.

Sure have Bruce
Something of a relief. It was oil pump & strainer next. Not a pleasant prospect having just done the timing belt Quote:
Given the engine has 171k on the clock with only evidence of a head rebuild, I thought the readings were pretty ok!! It gives me some confidence in the engine. I know it needs either valve stem or turbo seals, and it's a little tappety, but would on the face of it seem pretty sound. As for the switch, might put the single spade one back in and see what happens. Cheers for the input

As Colin says...oil pressures are fine.....
So my unmolested 86 WR is a G chassis and I have the cannister type sender - I have also had the same issue as you in the past - hence my post earlier about removing the unit and flushing it with carb cleaner - There was an incident several years ago ( about 20 years ago to be honest) where I had a constant oil pressure warning....so the car went to Audi and came back with the single spade sender in its place and the explanation.. 'oh don't worry, they all do that' . Needless to say, I made them give me the original unit back and flushed it out and all was well!!! There have been some grey areas with Audi and their part number designations, especially when close to and just after chassis number change.....mine has got a few 'odd' part numbers on it that shouldn't be there! |

Love that response from Audi, replace and hope for the best by the sounds of it. Thanks for the confirmation on the pressures, not too much amiss there. Gives me the confidence to get it out and use it again

Yes, I had visions of front end off again, timing belt, subframe, sump and oil pump out Trust me, I had a beer or two last night.
