Lacquer Peel

What causes it? How do you stop it? What can you do once it starts?

The last time this happened to a car of mine (Golf GLi), I had to get the whole panel painted and relacquered.
Mine was cause by a stone chip that got got progressively worse over a few months.

the breakdown in the lacquer can be down to a few things such a fallout, bird droppings, tree sap, acid rain, rain from near factories.

The only cure is to strip it all off and then repaint it sadly.

The only way I can explain laquer peeling is panel has been sprayed before with celulose laquer which was quiet popular in UK years ago. It dried out quickly but here is the result. Properly sprayed 2K laquer will never peel under any conditions.
I get 2 - 3 customers with this problem every month.
The only way is sand it off, primer and spray whole panel again.

later VAG red paint is notorious for it.

The single stage red went pink and faded and when they used lacquer, it just peeled!!

Same as VAG light green metallic.. after years turned to just metallic

Thanks for the comments everyone.

For info, I'm pretty sure the car has been outside all its life and the paintwork is original (I've had it 22 years).
Car is often parked under a tree, but is regularly washed, and only peeling in the area shown.
There was a chip in this area which may explain at least one of the peeling areas, but my observation was that it almost seemed to bubble up in the heat of the summer sun...

My Coupe is 23 years old now and most of the paint on it I think is original. Pictured here is the rear spoiler and it has not only signs of bird droppings ( which if cleaned immediately are not a problem ) but also a mass of fine scratches. My local paintshop chappie reckons the paint has cracked in hot sunlight , very finely, under the lacquer coat . His solution is the same as Coxys, strip back to bare metal and respray complete car. Well, it just ain't gonna happen I'm afraid..... and the whole car is like this....teach me to buy a car unseen and rely on photographs !!

You could try using 3M finesse finishing compound, its not as aggressive as t cut or or the G compounds. Its quite dear but very good

it probably had a blow in at some point and only had a thin layer of lacquer applied
