Previous owner had a red B2 Quattro that, judging by the amount of red paint on this, he painted outside on a windy day.

This is the paintwork after a proper powerwash and a first pass with the claybar.

These are typical before condition shots.

A lot of muck and roughness!

I was thinking same, balance your perfectionism with what is realistic for this particular car. Some things you can do on a budget that might transform it. But sort the mechanicals.

The mechanicals are easy it is the cosmetics that’ll make or break it.

I’m treating it now as a learning exercise on DIY paintwork and I’ve prepped the drivers door to get rid of some deep scratches. I’ve ordered some paint and thinners, I’ve got a good quality modelling airbrush and compressor and I’ll play with that for a bit.

If it works, it works, if it doesn’t no great loss.

I did think about a MOT failure Passat and a 1.8T but it’s been done hundreds of times before, my Cortina was a similar sort of thing so there’s no new challenge with that...

I’m dubious when I see Mark’s 2.6 B4 Coupe sitting for sale at £2.1k that’d it’d be worth much at all.

I just don’t want to throw more money away.

Trouble is that the vast majority of B3/B4s aren't worth a carrot and haven't enjoyed any significant increase in value yet.

To sink any significant portion of your hard-earned into one for any reasons other than a) you like them because of some insane nostalgia; or b) you enjoy spending money on a hobby involving increasingly obscure, 20-30 year old German mechanicals; is probably not sensible in the first place and is never going to end in any sort of profit

Personally i reckon that coupe deserves your tender touch and while the 90 was money-no-object, the challenge with this one should be to do it on the tightest budget possible...? I bet it'll turn out better than alright after you've worked your magic on it and someone will snap it up
