Default 1989 90q judder when braking

This has just started happening
wheels are balanced and its fine when driving. no wandering or anything.
two new track rod ends, tracking recently adjusted, locknuts on adjusters tight.
top mounts seem fine.
its only started happening since the tracking was done. about a day after i started to get a slight judder under braking and since then its gotten progressively worse. it was fine before i had to free off the track rod adjusters. the wheels are on properly and torqued correctly. i can feel a little bit of play in the steering when moving the wheel when i'm stationary and the steering column itself seems to have a bit of up and down movement. The steering wheel centre bolt is tight.

Its fine when driving--only happens under braking

any suggestions??

Try wheel bearings? If everything is as you say, maybe its your discs starting to warp a little?

I suggest the discs. Sometimes things like that happen by coincidence

Id say brakes also, see if you can take it to your local garage ask them to drop it in the brake rollers to double check and also which side if just one is doing it.

Check they're not binding on, and that the hub faces are clean aswell before fitting new discs.

gonna whip the front wheels off tonight and check for any warpage and report back.
there seems to be some play in the top mount when its jacked up. is this normal as they don't actually bolt into the turret and they do drop down a bit when the wheel's off the floor?

Yes they do drop a little. They are held up by the collar you can see on the strut top under the bonnet.

yeah the top hat washer stops them falling through but should that bit of a drop cause play when you rock the road wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions?

Not really. If your top mounts were worn you would probably hear a knocking noise when driving. Assuming your steering lock is on when you are moving your wheel, it sounds like it could be a wheel bearing. Whats it like 6 to 12?.... When the allignment was done they may have slackened off the bottom ball joint sliders to adjust them, check that they have re tightened them. Also check your wishbone bolts are tight. Maybe take the top nut off and check the threaded collar is as tight as i can be too.

I guess the only way to really check your top mount is to whip the leg out and get hands on.
