Default Quick help request

After a few months of SORN and lay up over the last Winter, fired up the cq today.

Started very quickly and was out for a little run around and warm up ready for taxing next month. Of course I was driving on the private roads around my estate.

However, only snag is it refuses to idle and when the engine is in "over-run" there is a light occasional popping from the exhaust. ( By over-run , I mean when going down hill with the accelerator not depressed )

Any help or ideas appreciated please.

when you say it refuses to idle what are the symptoms? hunting between revs?. idling high?

Popping is usually the sign of a rich mix and petrol being burnt in the exhaust as I recall

Symptoms are an unwillingness to idle. Basically the car stalls/cuts out when coming to a standstill instead of idling at 8-900 rpm.
Yesterday, on one occasion when I re-started the car, it went up to an idle of 1200rpm; on "blipping" the throttle it then went up to 1500 rpm and a further blip sent it to 2,000rpm,each time holding the higher figure for about 5 seconds, but subsequently dropped back to a 1000 and then finally died away to zero.

Re-starts ok but will not hold idle.

Do these have an idle stabilisation valve?

The description sounds similar to a bad valve, and possibly a dirty throttle body. I'd be looking at both of these. However, I know next to nothing about CQ, so I could be well off...

If there is an idle stab valve, it will look like a metal cylinder about 4-5 old inch things long, with connections in and out of the induction hoses, and an electrical connection, probably a 3 pin connection.

I found these on vagcat

Idle adjustment, item 5(?)

Idle stab, item 11

Many thanks Mark, I'm thinking along the lines of the ISV which I hope it is. A bad valve would not cause the engine to completely stall would it?

I'll have a look-see tomorrow. It seems like a problem caused by possibly damp as we've had more than our fair share of damp this Winter.

Thanks again.

I know this is probably duff info but I had a Volvo do this a long time ago and it was as I remember a fuel pump relay dying of old age.. (The garage I used went straight to it when I explained what was happening.). This is however a long time ago so I wouldn't treat it as the fix you need. Hope you get it sorted Frank.
