Ignition Timing
Hi Guys.
Audi coupe , 2.3e 5 cylinder NG engine code. Ive got TDC, The mark on the cam lines up and the 0 on the flywheel. When I line up the | on the edge of the dizzy to the rotar arm the engine doesn't run the best. I have to turn the dizzy about 10mm for it to run better. But then the dizzy knocks slightly. Any idea why the car wouldn't run at its best when all the timing marks are in line ? Thanks Mark. |

HT leads on wrong? Is the NG timing set at 0 or 8/15 degrees advance?

Ive put new plugs in , dizzy cap and rotar arm. Had the dizzy inspected by H&H ignitions ( dizzy is fine ). Going to order some leads off ebay from powerTEC when they confirm the ones I need. Unless anybody can recommend any HT leads ? Not sure where to check for 0 or 8/15 degrees . When I have everything lined up nice TDC etc , I have to move the dizzy approx 10mm clockwise to get the engine to sound and run better. |

Are you aligning the mark viewed through the back of the timing belt cover?
5k ohms leads, quinton hazell leads in all of mine, including a five pot turbo, they seem to work and are built properly. |

I'm taking it into a friends garage on Friday ( as long as I have some new HT leads ) to get it on his ramp to change the petrol filter.
I will check the timing with his light when I'm there. So I should tell him 15 deg btdc ? I can only find these leads , http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PowerTEC-S...gAAOSwYmZXDm-L Anybody used these ? Would genuine Audi be more expensive if they still do them ? Last edited by pastit; 10-10-17 at 06:54 PM. |

Not sure about the NG engine but on my 7A there are 2 marks on the flywheel a 0 for TDC and a 12 for BTDC (TDC = top dead centre, BTDC = before top dead centre) the engine should be timed with a strobe to the BTDC mark, effectively firing 12 degrees before it gets to TDC (on the 7A) thats why when you move your distributor about 10mm it runs better as you are getting closer to the correct BTDC setting.
If you locate the 0 mark in the transmission housing try moving the engine a few mm anticlockwise using the front crankshaft bolt to locate the other BTDC mark which sounds like its a 15 on your engine not a 12 as on my 7A. |

If you have an adjustable strobe where you can dial in decrees BTDC (advance) you could use the 0 mark with 15 degres of advance dialed in to allow you to time it against the 0 mark rather than using a static gun against the 15 (on your engine 12 on mine) mark.
Not sure of the rpm you need to do this on your engine though check the manual for the setting, using the number one plug lead obvously. Last edited by quattrodave; 10-10-17 at 07:02 PM. |
