The Last Group B quattro!
Two potential World Champions are shown here, battling for the 1986 Title - and the last ever WRC for Group B Rally!
John Buffum had a clear vision of how this rally was going to be, and stayed clear of the battle. He finished 3rd, just as he had planned. The last quattro ever to be campaigned in Group B WRC - Spectacular! |

I've got this on vid somewhere, I love how Nini Rosso and the some of the Lancia mechs meet the state trooper, with what you can see as ' what the f**k do you want hombre.
Buffum did well against the new space frame technology of Lancia and peugoet, anyone know which S1 he was in ? |

I met John Buffum in June of 1998 at the Mt. Washington Hillclimb, Climb to the Clouds, he was the Chief Steward of the event. Got to chat with him, face to face at the start line/gate area, and he was great to talk to. At that point, there was no doubt, he was a fan himself.
I recommend the book written by his co-driver Tom Grimshaw, In Like a Lamb, Out like a Lion, ISBN#1-881539-02-4. Rallying at this time (1984-86) was so savage, 400, 500 even 600 hp and these cars as phenominal as they handled were really held together with a fickle magic. Seems like the 1985 season in particular was fraught with mechanical failures. Spectacular to see and hear. Buffum's car present (he was at Pikes with his son in law Paul Choiniere) on a previous year. |
