WJ as donor for a WR?
Hello.
I think I have found a WJ engine in unknown state at a breaker. Question is how similar are these 2 engines? Is it worth consider buying just for parts or is it only a few parts that are similar? Greetings quattro84dk |

It's (WJ) the earlier turbo I5 from the C2 era 100/200. The spare engine that I bought for a complete rebuild turned out to be a WJ.
Comparing it against the WR, it's largely similar, but requires some machining work at the rear to accommodate one or two sensors used in the WR that didn't exist in the earlier turbo setups. There's something different about the end of the crankshaft- my spare block was also fitted with a flex-plate for an auto transmission. Ultimately, it's not a straight swap, but the issues are not insurmountable.

Ahaaa, the good old WJ I5 turbo, so be careful what you get as there is the long nosed (early) one as in my 200, then at the beginning of 1981 they reduced the length by i think 49 mm (would have to check ). You will see the difference at the back of the cam cover, the longer one has a longer taper on it which is possibly the same as the ur quattro one's ?
It's a good strong engine...errrrr...when you get it set up and running sweetly. |

Thx Søren I will remember that for later. Looking at all the faults my car has already, engine is probarbly bad aswell . Still don't yet know excactly which parts I need for my WR engine since i haven't tried to start it yet. Gonna order some filters, oil and cambelt kit one of these days. Original question was more regarding what parts could be reused from a WJ on the WR, im not considering to use the WJ engine for anything but parts. If it is worth getting or there are many differences. I have some crappy phonefotos if any of you can identify if its right or wrong. Sorry for bad pictures

Then, the best thing to do is take a look through 7zap, as it will provide a reasonable cross reference.
I'm actually going to be using the Block, modified to WR(provision for the flywheel sensors). I believe the crank and rods are useful. The head casting is likely useful to, especially in light of reducing supply of viable heads.

Looking at the photo above, there is a part of the engine block casting missing, between the flywheel and the left engine mount, the bit that is missing is very close to where you have to cut the timing pin sensor in or has the timing pin sensor been cut in and not used????? Photo below of WR block timing pin sensor location. |
