I was lucky in that I managed to obtain one about 5-6 years ago from fleabay. New and still in the box, I paid about 75 for it, but I was told by Pete Reeve at the time that these were about 160 new from Audi before they became NLA.

You can't stick any old Aerial on I believe, as the diameter and angle of the base is unique to the coupe body - so I was told.

The price is the price, if he's got one and you need one! They are extremely rare and difficult to find.

You have a couple of other options that "work" for the type 85....

Manual Fuba Antenna. Looks the part when installed. Cheaper than the electric antenna, nowhere near as sought after. If the body of the antenna wears internally, the mast has problems staying up. Also, the manual mast (if left up), is a target for vandals.

Hella Antenna. Hella do (or maybe did) a short stubby antenna to suit the type 85. This is the best of all the aftermarket solutions IMO. These are very rare however. Again, a target for vandals.

The best one is the electric, this is partly why they are so sought after. Generally sell for 150 - 200 if in working order. Less for broken ones (or bargains). These can fetch fierce money in Germany. Last year I saw one sell for 250 or thereabouts.
I saw half of one sell on ebay.de last week for 75ish (just the bottom half, in unknown condition).

Just don't ever ever ever leave your car at Radtec, that's what Nick Dye did, and it's never been seen since. They are based in the shittiest area, bar none of Cannock.

i can appreciate the pursuit of originality. but tbh, there's not much that's 'original' left on my car . The aerial that's on my car was suppose to be something 'special' apparently. . But its not electric, and the only thing i can see that makes it 'special' compared to other Aerials i've had, is that it has never ever worked! . lol

No Pete, it was his Graphite Coupe quattro 20V Turbo that went missing.
