the vacuum in the crank case draws air 'past' a phooked crank oil seal, causing a noise that i'm yet to learn.. i think. until it gets oil between it (the seal) and the crank. then it stops. pulling the dip stick breaks the vacuum, i just never thought of that before... doh..

You'll never forget it once you've heard it - it sounds like the worst bearing squeal on the planet but you can switch it on and off with the dipstick.

The rear crank seal lip essentially functions as a giant reed.

OK. sorry but i never filmed it as i couldnt find any batteries.

BUT, my friend came round and heard it as well, it was loud enough to hear clearly, it certainly isnt the cambelt OR any belt. Its coming from the back top part of the engine, slightly worse when rev'd, goes away after about 2 mins, cant make it doing when it warmed up.

Friend said he had exactly this on a golf and it was the secondary air injection, sounds a bit like a higher pitch hoover????

Anyone shed any light on this please.

Car runs 100% fine

lol! dunno what you need! someone will know..

noises, did someone say noises..?

well, between the two cars that see the road i've had, every knock and bang from every subframe mount, anti-roll bar bush, ball joint, top mounts etc. screaming alternator belt (was way too tight), cracked/leaking ex. manifold, tappets, brake proportioning valve arm rattling (worked its way loose from the spring somehow), screaming rad. fan (still does it!) mildly screaming dizzy, exhaust knocking off of the rear floor pan, the noise of an 'on the way out' auto box on two other 44s (one only did it in reverse, one does it all the time..), the noise (and smell)of an interior heater fan on its last legs, the noise of a door lock (click!)which is just about to stop working, an, as yet, undetermined 'pumping' noise from the engine of the 2.0 (?!?), every kind of pop and bang related to a fooked lamba probe, a current screaming on start up which i've not yet tested for, every p.a.s. pump on the four of these things i've had makes a different noise (dunno which noise is the right one), but the only noise that matters... a 10v turbo at 5-6K rpm, in third gear, on the wrong side of the road, passing long lines of trucks, tourists and motorists, saying to themselves... WTF was that..!??!?
