Coupe/NG Temp sender

Morning!

I'm trying to replace the temp sender on the Coupe.

The part number on the current sender is 035 919 369 L, the number listed on 7-zap is 035 919 369C.

The L is a 4 pin sender, the C is a 3 pin sender. Everything I can find suggest that the 3 pin sender is a replacement for the L (despite it being the earlier suffix).

Was the 4th pin superfluous or is there something else going on?

The common listed aftermarket replacements (searching on both part numbers) is the Mahle TSW 46, which is a 3 pin part.

I've been thrown into a state of discombobulation by this one.
