Default VCDS?

Hey all,
I recently upgraded the rear parking control unit on the A6, the one I bought to replace the original is supposed to show an image of the car with indicators to show what the sensors 'see'. But so far this hasn't shown up. So when I did a bit more digging I'm supposed to update the control unit via VCDS so that the A6 recognises it. Now, I have no clue of VCDS, I know what it is but I've never used it. My question is has anyone here used it, is it easy to use and what one is the best to buy? In the long term I'm interested in doing more internal upgrades to the A6 so I think it would be good to get this. Any help would be appreciated folks.
