Ahhh! Forgot something important!! Under the intake boot is a valve. Deceleration fuel cut off valve! That is verry likely to stick open causing big air leak and not idle... Take that out... Is not easy though... And clean.

Thanks , thats sounds like a likely culprit.....but why is everything I need to do so inaccessible on Audis....heater matrix, clutch return spring and now this little critter.....

Well , being me, I went for the easy option first.

Opened the bonnet, identified the ISV and its electrical connection. Removed the securing clip and unclipped the electrical connector. Looked very clean and no sign of corrosion.
However, gave it the hot sex treatment ...i.e. pushed it in and out a few times

and then reconnected.
Fired up the engine and it ran perfectly. Disconnected the plug again while the engine was running and there was the problem again .....so I'm pretty sure it was either the connections being poor, or perhaps the ISV is on the way out, but right now all seems well.
