Ok pressure bleeder fitted, still nothing from the rear caliper. Crack each Union on the abs and all weep fluid apart from NS rear.

So it would appear something is stuck in the module, has anyone ever taken them apart??

Is the car/brakes in a condition that you can drive it.......maybe driving it and braking so as to make the ABS work might help?........then try and bleed.

John, I thought about making that suggestion, driving the car without all the brakes working but I thought a suggestion like that would just add to people laughing at me

Not a daft idea at all! Probably better than opening something up that might end badly! Plenty space round here to drive it I’ll give that a go I think

Success!

Luckily I left the pressure bleeder pumped up while I went inside for some food, came back out and tried again and hey presto we have fluid from the caliper!

Must have needed a while for the pressure to do its thing and squeeze right along the lines. Bled the back 2 sides and went for a drive, lots of ice patches on the drive so gave the abs a workout at the same time. Came back and double checked by bleeding all 4 corners and still have a good pedal.

Rebook the MOT in the morning now and all should be well 👍

Looks like sustained pressure to shift a blockage in the pipework was the secret; difficult to understand how the tool can generate higher pressure than the master cylinder though, especially if the engine was running during an earlier attempt. Did you take a look at the crap that came out to see if there was some foreign matter present?

As an aside, the other "love of my life" (2000 BMW 740i Sport) requires the brakes to be bled using a computerised pump which "pulses" fluid through the system. If it's not used, the electronics recognise the fact and throws up warning lights across the dash on start-up.

Dealers charge £75 for the use of the pump and even non-franchised "specialists" charge around £45 + labour + fluid (min 2 litres) + VAT!
