Default Insurance companies are chancers

Written in caps to grab attention, as they truly are.
But their first task is to make their paperwork easy. If you want a quick claim, take it.

Otherwise,

ABSOLUTELY NEVER EVER TAKE THEIR FIRST OFFER

because along with being chancers, they are surely opportunists and incompetent in equal measure. So much so that they probably haven't really thought it through much.

If you have the time, take a moment or two, get over the emotional side, which will be quite considerable, and decide where you might go with it.

The back end of the car might be quite salvageable, but at a cost.
10k sounds way too high.

Just my 10c

The £10k is to deter any attempts to rebuild and put back on the road.

I'm hoping Mark has an agreed value policy that reflects what it will take to replace.

Agree with the insurance valuation comments. Our insurers reviewed our Ur and accepted £40k valuation after its restoration. The write off value is based on the insurers % repair value over insured value. So even at our agreed value, looking at Marks car, it would probably exceed our valuation. Also, insurers are taking a more ‘modern car ethical ‘ approach with classics, put simply, if the damage, in their eyes, deems the car unreliable because of safety issues- e.g. fire damage to dashboard and wiring, then it’s finished in their eyes,

Sally and I were absolutely stunned when we learnt of this incident. Over the years we've become good friends with Mark living locally and he has been a regular at our Noggin n Natters. That car has been his passion for over 25 years and I always had a special affection for it because when new it was Mike Massingberd's where I used to work. Mark is the nicest of men and despite his loss turned up to the Noggin n Natter yesterday. He is still in a state of disbelief as to what's happened. Understandably still emotional almost to the point of tears as he told us about it. Mark actually coming to see us at The Noggin yesterday was incredible after what's happened, it must have taken tremendous courage to do so. As always it was a delight to see you despite the circumstances.

How the hell is that not Cat A or B?

The metal on the body/chassis would have annealed for a start.

I'm surprised it's up for sale because a month or two ago I offered to buy it from Mark via pm here but I didn't get a reply.

Under the circumstances, I’m guessing Mark was so gutted after nearly 25 years of ownership that, understandably, he let it pass into the insurance world. I completely get that, I really do.

It’s the next stages of the process that we are witnessing now that are less palatable...

I’m assuming the car, having passed through the insurance process carries a category status, but for it to be for sale suggesting “ return to the road” condition is, whilst at no ultimate cost is ultimately possible. It does question mark that insurance process though. If nothing else, because basic physics says metal is structurally different after thermal annealing.
