Am I right in thinking that it started rolling forward from a couple of years ago, so on a 40 year rolling gap?

Simply put, yes...

....But in actuality you can only get the exemption on the 1st April after your car turns 40. And you have to apply, its not automatic. You need to transfer the car to the "historic" tax band instead of 'private/light goods" using a form and your v5....

A load of shite if u ask me! Glad they brought the rolling exemption back, but why the arbitrary figure of 40 years?! My 90 would already be exempt under the old system.

But I guess thats the reason: they want my money still...!!

^^^^ Yep Melis, remember as if yesterday the day the Cons announced the 25 years rule back in 1995 ish and thought, .. .. YES! Get in. Labour took over and scrapped it to my annoyance and now the current crop of Cons (Thatchers children) won't honour their original pledge. Barstewards!

If it was a rolling 25 years, within the next 2-3 years at least 6 of my cars would become exempt! That would be nice! Then I could justify having a few more

ive put this up on Mk1 Shogun/pajero uk, the Merc forum and Retrobike. 7 more names and counting from them.
