Default Atf fluid type and specification

What fluid is correct for 3 speed auto gearbox on a 1988 B3 audi 80?

Ive heard dextron 2 mentioned by friends in the past

Yes, Dexron 2 was used by VAG in its gearboxes of that era.

I've always managed to find Dex 2 in Halfords when I needed it so I can't say whether you could use Dex 3 and so on, but it wouldn't surprise me if you could use the newer fluids. I believe the COMMA website can give you a better idea....
