I don't deny the engineering marvel of the modern breed of rally cars, and, Group B was never utopia, least of all for the quattro. (it was, after all, a Group 4 machine adapted). But it's the basic bodyshell types that leave the delight thin on the ground for the common man. I defy anyone over the age of 20 to 'aspire' to owning a fiesta, unless they're a complete motoring Luddite. It's the regulations you see, they've dragged rallying down the food chain of TV rights, down the model ranges of the manufacturers and down the radar of the common man. See that Polo thingy... Now if that was a VR6 engine, making probably the same power (say, nominally 300bhp) and in a Scirocco bodyshell with big arches, it'd be a whole new ballgame. All IMHO of course.

Is Present day F1 better than in the 70/80/90's?
Is present day football better than in the 70/80/90's?
Is present day 'music' better than in the 70/80/90's?
It's all down to your perspective.

im sure theyre great little rally cars.

but i'm sorry i can't get excited about polos, fiestas and suzuki swifts.

and your right i havent been to a rally in years (last time i went was at chatsworth/clumber park)..... but would watching fiestas and polos give me the enthusiasm to go? not really.
however carlos sainz is a driving legend.

I was meaninglessly surfing the interweb and came across this post from 2007 in a thread about old WRC vs. new WRC cars...

Quote:
I went to the Phil Price rally school last year and asked him the same question and he said the modern stuff is much faster as it can put all it's power on the ground due to the modern electronics.

He reconed you could safely stand behind a WCR at the start of the stage, but stand behind a factory Group B car and you would be stoned to death as it dug two trenches trying to put 500bhp down without aid of launch control.
Another one wrote..

Quote:
True, but still one hell of a spectacle. Watching one come off a special stage with steam pouring off the watercooled brakes, the turbo snorting and flames coming out the exhaust, it's probably the closest I'll come to ever seeing a dragon for real
Then I thought... What if you put one of the young and fast WRC drivers into a Group B car... Would he fail miserably ??

Reminds me of Sunseeker 2010, we sat behind Adam with his 20v making somewhere north of 400bhp and on Loose gravel. The starter counted down and at '4' the quattro started building up the revs, by '2' it was farting flames and bouncing off the rev limiter and at 'go', the starters arm went up and the quattro started heading for Australia, the trenches were a good 3" deep and the starter was utterly hanging in Mud... Brilliant memories...

They started 90deg right of the front car, Adams is the third from the back.

Tim also tried a bit of trench warfare...

Awesome stuff.
