They were so fiercely expensive to build they (the top teams) only had one or two at best, so if an event saw one damaged prior to stage running, they'd pop a standard engine in with the breather system/fuel system etc of the rally car and tell the drivers to 'drive around' the issue.
Sponsors and event exposure are far stronger than performance.
